Improvement works

The North Somerset Standard

NSH has promised to bring homes up to the "North Somerset Standard" and maintain this standard.

A "North Somerset Standard" home would be a warm, secure home with:

  • doors and windows that are safe and provide good security (including new ‘Secure by Design’ front and back entrance doors)
  • modern standards of home safety (for example, window locks and security lighting)
  • modern heating systems that are energy efficient
  • a modern kitchen (i.e. less than 20 years old)
  • a modern bathroom (i.e. less than 30 years old)
  • modern electrical standards
  • adequate noise insulation
  • secure and clean communal areas

A total of £39 million will be invested in ensuring tenants' homes reach the "North Somerset Standard" by the year 2012.

When will I get improvements done to my home?

A programme of improvement works is being drawn up by surveyors in consultation with tenant representatives. We will ensure that this programme is published in the tenant newsletter and that individuals are informed and consulted in advance of works.

What improvements are planned for the sheltered schemes?

NSH has allocated £4.8 million to spend on improvements to sheltered housing schemes. We are also introducing the following improvements to benefit older tenants living in NSH homes:

  • providing secure doors and window locks
  • reinstating the free of charge decorating and gardening services for elderly and disabled tenants
  • providing stores for mobility scooters
  • providing adaptations to aid mobility and independence in the home

When will works be carried out to sheltered schemes?

Priority for major works and improvements is given to tenants in sheltered accommodation and, where practical, works will be offered during the first two years after transfer.

NSH recognises that older people can sometimes find maintenance work disruptive and we would therefore make any improvements in close consultation with residents and their families.
